Cha Eun-woo: Beyond the face genius – A journey of singing, acting, and growth

It’s the highest praise for his unparalleled visual. However, this epithet might confine Cha Eun-woo to just being a handsome singer and actor. While he is indeed handsome, this year, there’s a need to pay more attention to Cha Eun-woo’s capabilities as a singer and actor.

Cha Eun-woo is an ‘all-rounder’. He received much love as the center of ASTRO and established himself as an actor as well. While active in group activities, he also solidly built his filmography as an actor, now naturally carrying the title of a singer and actor. He has also been active in various prominent variety shows. He possesses a solid global fan base and considerable popularity and recognition among the public.

Although he gained attention for his handsome looks since his debut, what solidified his current position are the activities he diligently pursued. He has a foundation that seems unlikely to easily crumble.

As a singer, Cha Eun-woo debuted with ASTRO in February 2016, but even before that, he started acting with a supporting role in the 2014 film “My Brilliant Life”. Combining singer and actor activities was a foreseeable event, and indeed, Cha Eun-woo has been steadily appearing in dramas since the early days of ASTRO, showing potential in acting.

Cha Eun-woo hasn’t been negligent in anything. While active with ASTRO, he released three full-length albums and eight mini-albums, and among them, he also hosted music shows. He starred in six dramas as the lead and appeared in two variety shows as a regular member. Just listing his major activities shows how much he has tirelessly worked over the years.

Even amidst a busy schedule, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to all his activities. His sincerity towards his activities is evident from his appearance in the SBS basketball variety show “Handsome Tigers” in early 2020. He impressed viewers by giving his all amidst outstanding members, and director Seo Jang-hoon even named him the most improved member in terms of skills.

Cha Eun-woo is releasing his first solo album “ENTITY” on the 15th, followed by a fan tour “2024 Just One 10 Minute [Mystery Elevator]” starting on the 17th at the Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul. The tour will be held in various regions of Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia.

As an actor, he is embarking on another challenge. The MBC drama “Wonderful World”, which premieres on March 1st. His character is already intriguing. He plays Kwon Sun-yul, who survived on the edge of a cliff after losing his loved ones and everything he had. The character description starts with ‘a mysterious figure,’ indicating a complex character. He will be acting alongside Kim Nam-joo.

This work and character are significantly different from his previous roles, which relied heavily on his visual appeal, such as “My ID is Gangnam Beauty”, “Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung”, “True Beauty”, and “Still 17”. Following the parts 1 and 2 released in December 2022 and February 2023, the tving original “Island” marked another important turning point for him.

Cha Eun-woo received praise for his portrayal of Johan, a character with a deep inner wound, in “Island”. While he seemed kind on the outside, he also exuded a coldness, and his face displayed a combination of the innocence of a young boy and the masculinity of a man, which was evident in “Island”, where he finally shone.

His growth and the mysterious charm that cannot be simply summarized by saying ‘he’s handsome’ make us look forward to Cha Eun-woo’s next journey, from his solo album to his drama.
