FT Island’s Lee Hong-ki confessed that he suffered from ‘hiddenitis suppurativa’ for a long time

FT Island’s Lee Hong-ki confessed that he suffered from ‘hiddenitis suppurativa’ for a long time.

Lee Hong-ki appeared on the YouTube channel “Shine a Light on Hidradenitis Suppurativa [Literal Translation]” on the 18th and revealed that he had suffered from a disease called Hidradenitis Suppurativa since middle school.

In the video, Lee Hong-ki opened up and said, “For a long time, I thought it was just a boil and only received surgical treatment whenever the symptoms got worse. It was only recently that I learned properly that my disease was actually hidradenitis suppurativa.”

He said, “I have had many events canceled due to hidradenitis suppurativa, such as broadcasts, concerts, and inability to move. “I couldn’t walk, move, sing, or even travel because of the pain.”

He continued, “It also caused a lot of heat, and there were times when I was a bit embarrassed to tell anyone. At some point, it exploded without me even realizing it. It was bleeding profusely, pus was pouring out, and it was so severe that I had to carry an extra pair of underwear. It was a complex.”

Lee Hong-ki said, “The moment this appears on my body, it is not a pimple-like pain or pain. So it hurt to the point where I thought, ‘I wish I could get my butt as a gift from Santa Claus.’”

He also revealed that the hardest part was the shame.

Regarding the reason why he couldn’t talk for a long time, Lee Hong-ki said, “There is a lot of resistance to the slightest feeling that comes from words. Nowadays, the disease has a name called hidradenitis suppurativa, but when I was young, if I was told that I was suffering from this disease, I would say, ‘It’s a boil.’ Many people perceive the word boil as an image of ‘a disease caused by not washing.’ I couldn’t speak well because I was ashamed and embarrassed.”

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a rare chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects about 10,000 people in Korea. It is known that lesions such as painful inflammatory nodules, foul-smelling abscesses, and fistulas appear repeatedly, mainly in areas where the skin folds, such as the buttocks, groin, and armpits.
