“Death’s Game” is receiving a warm response globally

“Death’s Game” is receiving a warm response globally.

According to TVING, “Death’s Game” recently recorded high viewership ratings, ranking as the 2nd most watched UV among all TVING original contents. It is also a global hit on Prime Video, entering the top 10 in 43 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and Brazil. We looked at the reasons for the popularity of “Death’s Game”, which is emerging as a masterpiece by TVING.

“Death’s Game” is based on a popular webtoon of the same name. It is a life-changing drama in which Choi Yi-jae (Seo In-guk), who is about to fall into hell, experiences death and life 12 times due to the judgment made by Death (Park So-dam). In keeping with the theme of ‘reincarnation’, the drama features 12 actors, including Kim Ji-hoon, Siwon, Sung Hoon, and Kim Kang-hoon, appearing in each episode, providing a wealth of entertainment.

In addition, all 12 actors went into filming with the mindset that they were the protagonists of the work.

Seo In-guk, who plays the main character Choi Lee-jae, said, “The faces and appearances are all different, but all the actors paid great attention to portraying Choi Lee-jae’s unique way of speaking.”

However, some criticized the ambassador for being childish. However, the 12 actors unified Choi Lee-jae’s unique eyes and tone of voice to increase immersion.

In Part 1, Choi Lee-jae experienced eight lives. Lee-jae, who was an ordinary young man, becomes a celebrity and becomes the president of the group he so desperately wanted to work for. In this process, the drama unfolds various genres, including action, noir, romance, and humanism, which has made viewers look forward to what genre and appearance Choi Lee-jae will transform into in the next episode.

Another viewing element of “Death’s Game” is the gorgeous visual effects (VFX). The drama unfolds in the underworld as the background where the main character, Lee-jae, experiences death and reincarnation several times. The realistic visual effects of Dexter Studio were added to the potentially childish setting, capturing the attention of viewers.

Dexter Studio is a VFX and content production company that produced the movies “Spring in Seoul”, “The Moon”, and the Netflix series “Gyeongseong Creature”. According to Supervisor Je Kang-seung, who was in charge of VFX design for the “Death’s Game” video, we focused on making the space where ‘Death’, a transcendent being, feel like a world that exists in another dimension.

In addition, scenes such as explosions and airplane accidents that occur against the backdrop of reality were drawn intensely to maintain a fantasy feel even when the storyline changed.

“Death’s Game” has a lot of foreshadowing and devices that drama fans can easily find. The 12 deaths that Choi Yi-jae will experience are expressed by the second hand of a clock. In addition, Jo Tae-sang’s (Lee Jae-wook) prisoner number, Lee Joo-hoon’s (Jang Seung-jo) locker password and Park Tae-woo’s (Kim Ji-hoon) car number 1201 signify the judgment of death that Choi Lee-jae will face in the future.

In the last episode of Part 1, an article in the newspaper that Jang Geon-woo (Lee Do-hyun) is reading, titled ‘Uncaught Serial Killer’, also attracts attention.

Regarding this, director and producer Ha Byeong-hoon said, “We have hidden clues about the people who will wake up in the next episode. He also raised expectations by saying, “I hope viewers will find it interesting because we have included ways to live and avoid death in Part 2.”

Diverse genres and gorgeous visual effects are not all that is involved in “Death’s Game”. Choi Lee-jae’s story and his subsequent deaths, which are covered in the beginning, pose heavy questions to individuals and society. Choi Lee-jae was portrayed as a young man full of dreams, going up to the final interview for a new employee at Taekang Group before graduating from college, but he fell into depression due to student loans and difficulties finding a job. While his girlfriend of seven years, Lee Ji-soo (Go Yoon-jeong), is on the rise at the company, he feels a sense of entitlement as he feels that he is alone and stagnant.

To make matters worse, Choi Lee-jae, who was kicked out of the rooftop room because he couldn’t pay the rent, makes an extreme choice. In fact, Korea’s suicide rate ranks first among OECD member countries, showing an overwhelming gap with second place. In contrast to the soaring suicide rate every year, the falling employment rate severely harasses 700,000 job seekers. Choi Lee-jae’s situation in “Death’s Game” is no different from that of other young people.

However, as Choi Lee-jae continues his reincarnation and death, he regrets his extreme choice. He gradually realizes that he had not even thought about the pain of his family and friends who cherish and love him. In Part 2, which will be released on January 5th next year, the main issues will be how the awakened Choi Yi-jae will grow and change, and whether he will be able to avoid death and survive.
